Supporting Teens (and tweens) Through Overwhelm, Shutdown, and Big Emotions

Being a teen can feel like walking through a storm you didn’t choose. Emotions swing fast, friendships feel fragile, and expectations — from school, parents, or peers — can feel crushing. Some teens withdraw, shut down, or act out in ways that leave everyone unsure what to do. These responses are normal, and they can be worked with gently.

In counselling, we focus on making sense of these intense feelings. Teens learn to notice what sparks stress, explore the thoughts and emotions behind their reactions, and practice ways to respond that feel manageable. Sessions are paced to the teen, so they don’t feel rushed or pressured.

Over time, your teen can feel more grounded in themselves and better able to handle the chaos life throws at them. They’ll start to see patterns, find small ways to regain control, and feel more capable of navigating school, friendships, and family life without constant tension.
